Commissioning and Inspection of Water and Irrigation projects in Kigumo and Kandara, Muranga County

On 14th August, 2020 the PS Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Joseph Wairagu Irungu commissioned and inspected various projects in Kandara and Kigumo aimed at improving water supply and irrigation.

He inspected Ng’araria Water Supply Project and Muiri-ini Secondary School Borehole Project. The projects entail rehabilitation of an existing borehole of production capacity 10,000 litres per hour and a new borehole producing 18,600 litres per hour respectively benefitting more than 6,000 residents.

He also inspected Karimamwaro – Makenji Water Supply at Gatumbo Shopping Centre which consists of raw water pipelines to Kinyona Water Treatment Plant, treated water pipeline to Mariira tank, water distribution networks to Makenji serving over 20,000 residents.

He then proceeded to launch Kandani Community Water Supply at Kandani Primary School which entails a borehole producing 12,000 litres per hour and set to serve more than 3,000 residents of Kahumbu ward. He also inspected Muthithi Community Water Supply which will supply 8,300 litres per hour; serving 4,000 residents and thereafter commissioned Githima Borehole Water Supply Project at Githima Primary School. The project has a high yield of 18,000 litres per hour serving 3,000 residents. He then inspected Gachocho Kanjathi Irrigation project being implemented by National Irrigation Authority.

The PS then proceeded to commission Makomboki Community Water Supply which consists of 3 million litres per day intake along Makomboki river, 20km water distribution pipelines and 4 No. Water storage tank of capacity 61,000 litres. The project is set to benefit more than 60,000 residents of Gitwe, Gatiaini, Nguruweini, Karandi, Kanderendu and Kimotho.

He was accompanied by Kigumo MP Hon. Ruth Mwaniki, Muranga County Commissioner Mohammed Barre, Water Secretary Eng. S.A.O Alima, AWWDA Director Peter Kihungi, AWWDA Sheila Mutunga, AWWDA Chief Manager Water and Sanitation Eng. Joseph Kamau, WASREB CEO Eng. Robert Gakubia, WSTF CEO Ismail Shaiye, NWHSA Chairman Erick Okeyo, NWHSA Ag. CEO Sharon Obonyo, NIA Chairman Hon. Joshua Toro, NIA CEO Gitonga Mugambi, local leaders and other water sector players.
